Hello guys...

My 2 year old Samsung Internal hard disk has started showing some errors. Intel Rapid Storage shows that my disk may be at risk.

As of it has passed its warranty period I'm planning to buy a new one.
My motherboard is Intel DH55tc.

I'm in India. So my budget in INR is around < Rs. 4000.

I'm Looking for 1TB. Western Digital preferable.

The above things I'm clear. What confuses me is the rpm, SATA 3GB/s & SATA 6GB/s. If I go for higher rpm & 6GB/s SATA, will that be compatible with my mobo..?

And other than that, any other thing i should keep in mind..?

Your current MoBo is SATA II (3GB/s), but SATA III (6GB/s) is backwards compatible, so you'll not have any incompatiblity issues. Also, higher the RPM, faster the drive. Make sure you get 3.5" driver not 2.5", which's slow. There's no performance drop of SATA 2 over 3 in HDDs as they are simply not fast enough to utilize the extra bandwidth offered by 3. SATA III mainly helps SSDs. WD Blue or SeaGate Barracuda 1TB are all great drives :)

Your board only has SATA II (3GB/s) ports unfortunately, SATA III (6GB/s) drives would still work, just at lower speeds.

This would be good - http://www.flipkart.com/wd-caviar-green-1-tb-desktop-in...

There's no performance or speed difference b/w SATA 2 and 3 for HDDs. WD Green is extremely slow, never recommended.

Yeah, you are totally right. I wouldn't usually recommend a green drive, but the OP did say that his budget was less than 4000RP (or I assumed that's what he meant).

Thank you all for your quick responses.

Unfortunately, WD Blue Cavier is out of stock on Flipkart. Snapdeal has a 500GB one.

And the reason I've been avoiding Seagate is the review by "Atul Navadiya" on the exact page that you sent me...MeteorsRaining.

I've googled it & it seems true that Seagate's drives are not reliable these days.

Anyway, thanks to you all. I'll look for WD Blue Cavier in the local market & if i don't get it, I'll go for Seagate. I consider this question resolved.

But, just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me about the error I'm getting. " You data may be at risk". I've been getting it for past 2 weeks. Nothing happened till now. I've created a backup. How long does my PC have.? (Shit, it sounds like cancer)...

Well, just my two cents here. Seagate Barracuda are as reliable as WD, the comparision there was biased, look here for details as of why:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/02/17/backblaze_how_n...
^Mainly concentrates on consumer vs enterprise HDDs, but explains the testing had the worst of Seagate's drives vs normal WD and Hitachi drives.

Personally I'm using my Seagate barracuda for 7 years now w/o any issues. Also, I'm Indian too and use Quick Heal Total Security, never had that error, it isn't caused by AV. Do not get WD Blue if its costlier, there's no difference.

I see your point.

Other thing which I realized was that all these studies were made at a higher level, counting for companies that require high performance and all. I don't need that. I just need it for average home application.

Still, i got the point, I was just worried about the compatibility, which company to buy was the secondary issue.

If you're Indian you may know about the big sale on 6th (tomorrow) on Flipkart. Looking forward to it.

Thank You, and everyone else..

Hey guys, in need of your help again..

I'm getting a WD "Surveillance" Purple HDD at a very very low price. ( 3", 6GB/s SATA, 3 year warranty. )

will that serve the same purpose..?

Do you think it's a good idea to go for that..? Please reply soon...

It's not the fastest drive around but will be just fine for normal use, its very reliable and solid too :)

If something happens and I claim warranty, they wouldn't ask me for surveillance licence or something like that.. would they?

Lol no, its a consumer drive optimized for that purpose, doesn't mean it won't work with normal builds, and WD won't ask anything like that.

One LAST question ( probably.. lol :p )

My current HDD & DVD ROM are showing up like USB drive. They have an option of ejecting the drive. My first drive was Seagate and it did not have any issues. This itself is not an issue, but still, it is something that doesn't supposed to be. One thing that I understand is that both of them are connected through SATA (right..?).

Now when i install another drive, I wouldn't want such annoying option.

Can you help me in understanding this..?

The HDD needs to be connected through SATA, and the DVD ROM can't be connected via USB. This is likely a software issue, they can't be ejected lol. And ideally you won't have such issues with the new drive, but your system is acting weirdly IMO. CMOS reset would be my first option.

Sorry for the the delay. After getting the new HDD I was busy setting up my PC again.

Now my PC is working fine, with no errors & eject options. So, I think that bios reset is not required.

Thanks.
