I just delivered the system to a local computer shop. They have a no cure no pay policy so that's nice. In my case a cure would be a diagnosis, not necessarily a fix but it should be enough to get me going again. I wrote up everything I tried. It'll be a while but hopefully I'll get a phone call sometime next week.

Right, I just got back from the shop.
They managed to get the system working with the PC Mate without issues (wat) and they have found no coil whine. There has to be some kind of incompatibility involving the motherboard. I've asked them to test the Asus as well anyway, just in case I missed something, fresh eyes and all that. I'll probably hear from them tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
Chances are though that I'll be in the market for a completely different motherboard in a few days. The PC Mate works but it's so feature limited that I don't want to use it permanently. I can't even hook up my 5.1 sound, even though the PC Mate's sound chip supports it.
I will be contacting Asus by the way, if only to inform them of the issue.

Interesting(ya i am a geek like that lol) Give the sabertooth series a shot, great feedback and i have never had a problem with them other then user end errors tinkering the bios too high/low. Excellent warranty too. This is the latest model for your socket type, sexy aesthetics, dont cost much and if you dont mind 2nd hand gear even cheaper on the bay. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
EDIT: Not sure if it is compatible with your memory though, so make sure to consider that. I will check it out
EDIT2: Yup you would be good to go on memory as per chart here http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/SABERTOOTH_...

Okay what the fuck is wrong with the shops around here.
They just invited me into their workshop to show them the problem because they couldn't replicate it. I walk into the workshop, it's noisy as hell. Music and another computer whining away half a meter from my system. No shit you can't hear it in an environment like that. Even worse, I had to explain to the techs what coil whine is. Jesus.
They also "forgot" about the whole no cure no pay thing and charged me €150. I refused to pay, and after a somewhat heated discussion they dropped it to €48. I still feel ripped off.
The worst thing is that I still don't know if the coil whine happens with the PC Mate. The shop said no, but they obviously can't hear shit.
They told me the problem could be the mobo, or the PSU, or the GPU. You don't effing say?!
EDIT: Did I mention that the techs are 18 year old kids who know less about computers than I do?

Yeah, the rest of my system is super quiet, I designed it that way because I sit right next to it and it's in my bedroom. The coil whine is waaay louder than anything else, until the GPU gets up to ~70 degrees Celsius.
It doesn't help that my GPU is right next to a 200mm fan (ie a hole in the case for noise to pass through) and I'm right next to the fan. I don't think padding is going to help with that.
EDIT: The headphones are a good suggestion, but I always feel... watched... when wearing headphones. I'd have to rearrange my room so I can see the door from behind my desk or I'll get paranoid as hell. I'm not kidding.

Yes, it was one of the first things I tried. It's what led me to think that the PSU isn't the issue.
In a couple days/weeks I'll probably try the PC Mate again, and the old PSU just in case. For now I've got way to many things going on to disassemble and reassemble ten times again. I kinda need my system for nongaming purposes at the moment.
Just for gits and shiggles, which headphones would you guys recommend, without going overboard cost-wise? I know nothing about these things.

Headphones, me i like turtle beaches and have for years. ya ya i know they are old news and not the most current in thing and all, but for me they have always provided great quality at reasonable prices and have been a great gaming supporter for years, so i buy from them and give back. I use the z seven series which is incredible sound and really not much better out there unless you want to spend a grand on headphones, but if you want to go a bit cheaper, the PX22 will be fine.

Ive got the Vengeance 1400 and I find it pretty good, but headsets are quite a personal thing.

I did most of my tests with the side panel off, so without that fan.
The CPU cooler is directly and quite closely above the VRMs on the graphics card though... Way closer than the side fan. I had an H60 in my old system so there was just a waterblock above the graphics card. I've ordered a Swiftech H220X a while ago, maybe that'll improve things? I'm not feeling confident that it will, but who knows.
Thanks for the suggestion on the headphones! I know it's a personal thing, but I'd at least like to be looking in the right direction. Any 5.1 or 7.1 suggestions?
