XFX R9 280x low performance on almost all games.

I have been experiencing low fps in most of my games on my games and I don't know why. In games such as battlefield 3 I get a maximum fps of about 50 with drops to around 30. I have looked up average performance on this card on BF3 and other games I play and i am not getting anywhere near as much performance as I should be.

My Specs are:
CPU: AMD FX 6300
GPU: XFX R9 280x
PSU: Corsair CX600
Motherboard: Gigabyte 78-LMT USB3 rev 5.0 Black Edition
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64bit
RAM: 8gb

Please help as my performance shouldn't be this low
Thanks

If your PSU is stable, buying a new one won't give you better performance. That said, the CX PSU is not a good PSU, and I would replace it if it shows any signs of trouble (weird noises, crashes, getting too hot).

If I were you, I would buy an aftermarket CPU cooler such as the cooler master 212 evo, and overclock the CPU as high as you can safely to see if that helps. Note : You need to do alot of reading and do this right so you don't damage your system. DO NOT use a software program to overclock within windows.

Overclocking the CPU would be a safe way to increase the performance for 30$ if done properly. It may help a noticeable amount.

Otherwise I'm not convinced you have a real "problem" here, rather you want higher performance...

It could also be your CPU. Games like BF3 are CPU dependent, especially in multiplayer. Are you running your CPU at stock speeds? Overclocking may help... But if you attempt to overclock you need an aftermarket CPU cooler and alot of research. Whatever you do, don't overclock with software (from Windows). Take the time to learn and do it right. There are alot of resources online and once you read a couple guides you can always post here for additional questions.

thanks for the reply,
I have tried over-clocking to 3.8ghz and that didn't seem to change anything, I also get low fps in games like far cry. Could my card be bottlenecked by my cpu because in most games my gpu usage only reaches a max of 70%.

What speed is your RAM, and what resolution are we talking about?

Your CPU is a low end CPU for gaming. Your GPU is a mid range card. I'm not surprised to see the frame rates you are talking about. You also don't mention temperatures.

You are providing about half the necessary information for someone to help, and most than likely the answer to your "problem" is spend alot of money to upgrade other parts and make your PC faster.

If I were you, I would lower your settings a little bit until your frame rates are higher, and enjoy your PC. Provided your PC is stable, there is no magic solution to give you massive FPS bump without spending lots of money.

Sorry for not enough info, I don't post on forums a lot.
I Play at a 1080p resolution, 1600mhz RAM. My GPU temperatures are between 60-70 Celsius when i play. The performance doesn't increase no matter what settings I play it on.

I have 14.9 but was pretty much the same with 14.4. Do you think it is the cpu causing a bottleneck.

I really dont check this : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2322318/shadow-mordor-textures-benchmark-ultra.html#14305418 he has same system as you but overclocked gpu

I suppose it depends on the game. If i could oc the gpu i would but my power supply is only enough to run at stock clocks as i only have 600w. Do you know how to tell if you are getting bottlenecked?

Well im not sure about that because he has 750W quality psu so that may be a problem..and the bottlenecking is when the cpu is running at 100% and gpu at like 60% it should be gpu on 100% and cpu on 60%

I did some tests with msi afterburner and on a couple of games i had 60-65% GPU usage and 90-100% cpu usage, but on other games it is the other way round. Do you think i should get a better power supply as soon as i can and cpu cooler so i can oc and have a better psu suitable for gaming

Otherwise I'm not convinced you have a real "problem" here, rather you want higher performance than your PC is able to provide. I would try a handfull of different benchmarks on different games to see what your fps are.

In my opinion you could expect 30% less performance (give or take) with your current GPU on CPU dependent games, compared to benchmarks done by hardware websites with an overclocked i7. So yes, I'm guessing your CPU is bottlenecking you on certain games.
