I have a radeon hd 7870. I was foolish to have believed an overclocking tutorial online that they guaranteed would be safe. I overclocked my card to the "safe limits" using the AMD catalyst control center and ran one of my games. A few seconds into it, it crashed. Afraid, I restored all settings to default in the AMD overdrive tab where I tweaked them. This was a week ago. I'd installed the latest 14.9 driver package after that in this week. My problem is whenever I play my games they now crash. Either when I'm about to exit them or while playing or when starting. Once even my chrome browser crashed. Some buzzing noise comes from within the computer whenever this happens. I switch it off as soon as it happens. Usually around the time this crash takes place, I get the BSOD but it disappears before I can take note of anything. what do you think is the problem and is there a fix? If one hardware unit is the cause of this can the others be affected too?

Hello... Try completly un-installing/removing your newest driver from Windows Installed program list and put a earlier version that worked back on.
All my experience with BSOD is due to a Hardware communication, interrupting between the MB and Windows.
1) Make sure you have no un-happy hardware drivers in your "Device Manager"... No Yellow or Red icon indicators
2) Clean all card/stick edges with rubbing alcohol... And Re-insert cards.
3) Inspect and clean all DATA and Power connections... to your Hardware and MB.
4) Verify all devices CPU/GPU/MB temperatures are with in Normal operating temperatures.
5) Verify your Power Supply 12Vdc has enough current , To operate your Video Card and CPU, at the Performance setting you are using...

I did as u suggested. I reverted back to my last driver software. I downloaded a temperature monitor. The thing is, the temperatures of the CPU/GPU/MB seem normal without anything running but I'm too reluctant to re-open any application that may cause a crash. What should I do? Also these were under the release notes of the latest 14.9 amd driver I just uninstalled. What do you think?

UPDATE: I just got another BSOD. My games crashed twice or thrice again with a weird noise coming from the speakers. Can you please suggest something else? What do you think is causing this?

Hello...1 ) Can you give us a PIC of idle and gaming information using HWMonitor small APP? http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor/versions-history.html
2) Can you Look at the label on your PS and list the Current rating of your +12Vdc ?
3) Can you post a PIC of your Programs installed?
4) Can you Post a pIcture of your COMPuter Specs/Parts/OS list?
5) Can you Run the WEI without a crash?
6) What Game are you crashing in?
7) What is the Screen/Display settings are you trying to use?

BSOD are caused by alot of things... MY list has solved many examples of it... if you have a spare Hardrive install a fresh copy of WINDOWS 7 sp1 and no updates... the software will not cause BSOD thus if your computer does... it is due to the Hardware related items on my List.

Sorry for the delay I was caught up in work. Is this information useful?

Hello... Run the load test with a case cover off to see the temperature Difference of your GPU... also please provide your in game Graphic settings ( ultra/high/low/ETC ), and monitor resolution.
What other Programs are you running in the background during Gaming? Post a pic of your TASK MANAGER/Applications and TASK MANAGER/Processes.

I haven't been able to keep my task manager open in ages, don't know why. For sleeping dogs in particular my settings have always been ultra. There is another thing, I feel it could be the driver, now still. I'd installed 14.4 a week before I'd installed 14.9, before then I'm sure there was never a BSOD for me. Now I'm back on 14.4 from 14.9 after your advise. So unless you think its the hardware. Should I just go back to one of my previous drivers? and do you feel it could a hardware thing from all of the pics here? Also my maximum resolution is 1366x768.

Hello... I'm always concerned with temperatures the GPU can produce, both in a CASE and to it's self. I'm a Nvidia guy and I try to keep my GPU at 80C Max and below. And for me to do that I have to have good case Cooling and/or lowering my Graphic settings. You could be approaching that problem with your ULTRA setting... Maybe you need to re-post with this, "Safe GPU temperature of radeon hd 7870? "
I'm always concerned with the 12Vdc current, from the Power Supply, the Power the GPU Needs to Display all the Extra EYE Candy... A simple test of drivers and software is to Lower your settings for that game, and see if it runs without a crash.

But i'm not researched on your GPU product and AMD driver problems/History and the Game you are using.
Also alot of other Software you are running on a machine can interfere with each other Too.
So when I see a BSOD messages, I Post/List the things that have got the problem solved for me and the others I help.
BSOD are tuff problems too solve... and sometimes takes all those steps I listed to get rid of them... Sometimes it can be simple fix by a BIO Setting/Driver/Software Removal/Preference Settings.

TO PROVE it is the Hardware means installing a Fresh WIN 7 SP1 RAW ISO ( NO UPDATES ) install on a spare Hardrive with just Device Drivers will verify this... If you Blue screen with this , your hardware has a problem communicating with the MB. http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

Another way is to test your hardware in another Good machine.

Well I'm not sure if it's been fixed but I reverted back to one of the old stable driver (13.9) according to me....I've been playing most of the day without a single crash or BSOD...what do you think? I mean, for me to play for so long without a thing happening. Could I do this with a failing hardware? But still if it is the driver, I'll be surprised. I thought AMD was very good. Besides, do my temps look normal?

Hello... like I mentioned before... your GPU is running near 80C, with Nvidia Chips this is the limit I have found for Continuous Stable operation... What is the known good limit for your GPU? Did you do another post as I suggested?

Also can you post the HWMonitor data for your Power Supply Voltages in idle and during gaming?
