My external HDD (WD my passport) prompts to format the disk when i connect. The hdd was healthy until last week and I am seeing this issue since a week. I tried chkdsk which was stuckup for close to 2 days. Later a technician analyzed the harddisk and said the media is damaged but the data can be recovered. He was also able to tel the file types available. The only concern to me was he said he needs to get the software and would need a week to recover the data. Please suggest me some freeware or paid software which can help me recover the data.The harddisk capacity is 1TB and i got to know there is close to 100GB of documents and 300 GB of video n songs from the technician (am surprised how he found this in 10 mins)

This is most of the times caused by unsafe removal of the HDD. Though this may not be the case. Your safest bet to get your data back is to use a data recovery company services. You can also try using some software. There are tons of them on the internet. Just keep in mind that trying to recover the data with different programs may further damage the data.
