Family friend convinced me to get a bunch of old files off of her old computer. Her old computer didn't even boot (which is a problem for later) so I took out the old hard drive. By her description, her PC had the works of malware. Now I can easily just hook it up yo my PC, but I want to be incredibly careful, so how should I proceed? After I get the files, the entire HDD will be formatted.

if it been a few years most newer anti virus programs have better engines then the older ones a few years ago. plug the drive in and run a full scan and clean of the drive.

A safe way is to create a bootable AV disk...Kaspesrky or similar.
Disconnect all other drive, connect the infected one.
Boot from the AV CD.
Eradicate whatever is in there.

Then....connect all of them
Boot from your regular drive
Copy whatever you need off that drive.
