Computer crashing when opening GPU-Z and MSI

Hi,

This week I purchased a graphics card from eBay and I received it on Wednesday (I upgraded from an HD 7870 to an r9 290). I removed all the drivers using a tool which I found recommended on this website (unfortunately cannot remember the name of the program) and reinstalled the new ones.

However now when I try to run either gpu-z or msi afterburner my computer shows the loading screen for both programs then locks up completely, forcing me to hold the power button until the PC turns off.

My specs are: Intel I5-3570k (OC to 4.2GHz)
ASUS Z77-A
Corsiar vengeance 1600MHz (2x4GB)
Corsair AX860 PSU (860 WATT)
And an XFX R9 290 DD edition

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks :)

GPU-Z is to be used at your own risk. I used to run CoreTemp, but after that locked up my PC several times, I uninstalled it and installed HWMonitor. Getting some of those programs to work correctly is like playing the lottery; some will work fine and others will cause problems.
