Hi, i'm just wondering if i run my desktop at 1600x900 can i still run games at 1080p if i choose it from the option menu? I ask because use my TV as my monitor and everything on my desktop is too small to read when my resolution is 1920x1080 so i lowered it, but will games still work at 1080 or will they be downsampled to my desktop resolution? What about running a game in borderless window vs full screen etc. any negative impacts from changing desktop resolution?

Solution
If you are running the game in fullscreen it just changes the resolution of the monitor while it is running in full screen mode, when you exit the desktop will bring the monitor back down to 1600x900 so that will work fine. Borderless window and windowed mode won't work right since it will draw a window that is 1920x1080 and try to place it in a 1600x900 workspace so a lot of it will fall off the edges.

The proper way to have dealt with things being too small on the desktop is to make them bigger in control panel, set to medium or large and see if that fixes your issue at 1080

That's what i thought, but just before you answered i tried lowering my desktop resolution to 800x600 and then opened a full screen game running at 1920x1080 and it looked horrible. So do i have to change my resolution every time i want to play a game?

Ok thank you guys, I'll try changing the settings in the control panel, and it seems to be only one game that wont open in full screen at the right resolution, Shadow of Mordor. But just tested it with Metro 2033 and it works despite my desktop resolution.
