Problems with Canon S820 & monochrome printing

I have a 10 year old S820, with a printhead which I replaced a few years ago. Colour printing (including blacks) is fine, if rather darker than the image appears on the monitor (which may be due to calibration) but it has taken to producing monochrome prints in graded shades of mud. Black & white is fine on ordinary paper, but not on good photographic paper. It appears to come out black, but fades rapidly to silt. It does not matter whether I set the printer for greyscale or colour, the end result is identical, although curiously, where there is a lot of black in a colour image (for example, the bars on a church window) it gives a proper black image. It is driving me to distraction. Do I need a new print head, or is this just a sign that my printer is dying? Janet
