Hello.

I have a laptop internal HDD ie toshiba mk5056gsy with 7200 rpm. i have connected this HDD to my desktop via a usb to sata adapter. Now the write speeds on this drive are very low. Its maximum speed is 7 mbps while copying something onto it. I think my usb is 1.1 or 2(not sure). My question is will i be able to get higher write speeds if i used a usb 3.0 to sata adapter to connect it to my desktop?

Reply asap
Thanks :)

what type of USB does the usb to sata adapter have?

the speed you list is close to what USB 1.1 should provides.

if the adapter is USB2 then connecting it to a USB2 or USB3 should speed it up.

You say, "I think my usb is 1.1 or 2(not sure)", Are you referring to the USB-to-SATA adapter, or to the speed of the USB port on your computer? BOTH are important. You can plug a USB2 or USB3 device into any USB port and it should work. HOWEVER, the speed will be limited to the SLOWEST part of the system. So if the port is USB1.1, you'll never get any faster performance by changing the adapter unit.

Even USB2 (both adapter and port) will give you performance significantly slower than the HDD itself can do. If you want the HDD to perform as fast as an internally-mounted HDD, you will need USB3 on BOTH the adapter and your computer's port.

I was talking about the usb adapter. I dont have a usb 1.1 port on my pc. I just have usb2 and usb3. The HDD is connected onto a usb3 port. So there is no bottlenecking from the pc , so i guess i will just upgrade my adapter to improve the performance of my drive
