290 or 970? Which is overall better for me?

I am building a PC and thinking of having a 1440p monitor and a 1080p monitor, but they're separate. I need whatever will be cheaper (in 2-3 months when i buy) less power, less heat, and which can handle the monitors better. Take all of this into consideration, thanks!

Less power and heat is pretty much going to be the 970, regardless of manufacturer. It's 4gb of VRAM help it with 1440p. As far as performance goes, based on the few benchmarks I've seen comparing it to the 290, it should pretty much beat it.

I strongly suggest the 970 for your needs.

Nobody knows what will be out in 2-3 months. Right now I would recommend 970 considering they cost almost the same and use a ton less power.

In 2-3 months the 285X, 960, and possibly even things like the 295X and 380X will be out. Ask the question then, unless you are buying now.

So does the 4GB VRAM on the R9 290... no difference there, really.

But otherwise I agree. The R9 290 is cheaper after the price cut, but performance is a bit lower and it definitely draws a lot more power and turns it into heat.

Somewhere around then Nvidia should release GM 200 based on the 20nm manufacturing process. The new GTX 970 and 980 are intended to be replacements for GK 104 or the GTX 6xx series owners. GM 200 will be the real big guns aimed at GK 110 or GTX 7xx series owners. I don't see them being cheap though.

Oh, your right then, I was thinking it had 3gb for some reason. Either way, they would both do well.

If your case cooling will handle the 290's heat, and your psu will handle the power requirements, then for the price the 290 is the better deal. If you have to start upgrading to accommodate the 290, then the 970 is the better deal. Either gpu will perform great for most monitor setups and games, so it becomes a matter of taste, preference and practicality

Either way, 970 has the 290 beat in every corner you could possibly look at. Power consumption, overclockability, price, heat output, performance on 1080P, performance on 1440P, and performance on 4K monitors.

Not in every way anymore. The R9 290 is cheaper now, so it does win on price. Overclockability is also nothing special on the 970 (yeah it reaches very high clocks, but it starts at high clocks so the OC isn't actually that huge).

Thank god someone else has noticed this! The 600 series, and especially the 7000 series, were far better overclockers in terms of actual performance gains.
