I am looking to buy an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 and I was wondering whether it makes a difference if a buy, say a card from EVGA or a card from MSI. In particular I was interested to buy either the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 ACX 2.0 or the MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V. I know EVGA claims to be the number one provider of GeForce chipset cards but does that make a real difference in performance and/or reliability?

Go with the MSI 970. EVGA went the cheap route instead of upgrading their PCB and components like everyone else.

EVGA 970's are voltage locked IIRC and the 4 + 2 phase design isn't up to par MSI's 6 + 2 phase design. EVGA also used a cheap analog voltage controller.

EVGA is not and never was the number one provider for NVIDIA. It just looks like that cause they have like 4 different types of cards. EVGA cards are always one the hotter side as their cooler, however slick it might looks, is not very effective. ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI all have good cooling and you would not be wrong to choose either of them. Just get the one that suits your tastes in terms of looks. Also EVGA's 2.0 ACX cooler, to not go into technical details which I'm not an expert on, is not working as intended.
