I recently battled myself on what graphics card I should get. It was between the AMD R9 290 or the GTX 970. I thought Having 3 more games would be nice but the 970 was 5% better in performance. Also the AMD card ran hotter. Now There's deals on a AMD MSI r9 290, and the GTX 780. The 780 was technically the best in Envidias last generation and the r9 290x is the best in its generation too. But the GTX 970 is a newer technology and is cooler. My question, Does it make sense to buy the older more powerful cards because of the deals? or should I forget the past and Buy the new GTX 970?

Look at it this way, what graphics card is most likely going to be in the supply chain when you get around to buying a second one for SLI purposes? I would got for the 970 myself with an eye on getting another one some time later.
