What CPU is best for my situation?

I am going to be doing a mix between light gaming and video editing. I'm on a budget and this is my 1st build. I'm not really focused on render speed since my videos won't ever get longer than 10 minutes (5 on average). But what I do care about more than anything is a fast editing timeline for premium, Sony Vegas, and after effects. I know ram is needed. I'm starting with 8gb and will upgrade as I go. The games i will be playing are civ 5(or higher) simcity, Sims, and really a bunch of strategy and creation games. Nothing serious. Back to my question is what CPU should I get in don't want to spend a bunch of money and it would be nice if you could help me decided what graphics card. I don't want to spend more than $150 on a CPU but I will if good reason is specified. I was leaning towards waiting a little longer and getting a gtx 970 but since I'm doing light gaming going to a gtx 750ti or a r9 270x.

For 150.00 you are NOT going to get a GOOD CPU. You can get an OK cpu but nothing that's going to be a strong performer on rendering. In that price range you probably want to go with either an FX series 8 core or one of the A series AMD units. You're not getting anything from Intel for that price. If you don't game at all, the GPU being high end probably isn't as important to you since rendering is heavily CPU dependent. I'd think it made more sense in that case to put a bit more into the CPU and get a lower end GPU that will still allow for some gaming and pretty decent video play, like the 270X that you suggested.

What do you currently have and what is your overall budget and list of needed components. If you're just looking to upgrade the CPU and GPU only, then what is the model of your current motherboard.

How can you recommend that if you don't know if he currently has an AMD or Intel motherboard, or whether it's compatible with that or any i7? Since he doesn't indicate anything about purchasing a motherboard one can only assume he intends to use his current board so it might be prudent to wait and find out WHAT he has, prior to making recommendations, don't you think? Heck, he could be running an old Phenom II for all we know.

Did you see anything in his post saying, please recommend a new motherboard for me since I'm looking for one? heh. Just giving you hell dude. But really, he does clearly say CPU and GPU but makes no mention of motherboard. Anyhow, without input from the OP it's pointless anyhow.

I can't argue with that. If he bought an i5 or i7 that was unsupported by his current hardware, he would, certainly, be sad.

Well I'm getting a monitor with a resolution over 1080 and of course my gaming would increase dramatically if I got a better GPU. I was looking at the 8350 ... I haven't bought anything yet... So compatibility isn't an issue. I may get an i7 AMD just use the integrated GPU until I save up enough to get a above average GPU because that's eventually what I what to end up with. I wanted to wait to see if this up incoming AMD CPU architecture I heard about has to offer but I doubt it can compete with Intel's i7

That's all probably true, everything is conjecture until we know what you currently have. You still don't say what, if anything, your current motherboard supports. What is the model number of your current motherboard? Or, if it's a prebuilt system, the model number of that? Thanks.

It won't, I can almost guarantee that, unless AMD does something drastically unexpected or pulls a super secret rabbit out of their proverbial hat. If you want an idea of what you could get within a few different price ranges, give us some numbers to play with.
