The chase clock usually gets higher. And the integrated graphics card will improve along too. So the 4th Gen will be better or not Intel will just make the 2nd Gen and stop there. ;)

But don't forget that some 2nd Gen CPU when overclocked can perform better that some 4th Gen.

Don't forget the socket and chipset too.

In terms of raw performance, not a big difference I suppose. The biggest difference is in the chipsets that work with them. A newer processor requires a newer chipset that brings additional features and enhanced versions of old ones.

The big difference make i7 4790K . It has 4.0GHz base clock and 4.4GHz boost clock . But if you have i7 2600K , it is one of the best gaming processors . Another difference 2nd gen i7 suppors PCI-E 2.0 and 1333MHz RAM as standard . But tests show that i7 2600K is a great gaming CPU even though . Moreover , it could be overclocked

The difference is really in the integrated graphics and what the chipset supports, with the newer platform you are getting better storage interfaces like m.2 and sata express as opposed to regular sata. If you are buying now it would be worth going for the newest chips (if you can afford it) as they will last longer, although a 2nd generation core chip such as an i5-2500k is still an utter beast at gaming

if you get ssd , no need of new mobos that support "PCI-E ssd" .

Well what if I have a dedicated graphics like NVIDIA?

Then there is little difference, the newer chips run cooler (haswell doesnt), use less power and have better storage connectivity

We'll wha is your main purpose? Gaming, then get a dedicated graphics card and it will make a whole lot of difference when playing intensive games.

Well my purpose is running autocad and graphics and video editing so wanted to know if 2nd generation or 4th generation is best for me. Of course both with graphics card

If you are mainly editing, then any i7 will do because it has hyperthreading. Which is what editors look for in a CPU. But you would always want the better one.

Don't forget the 5th Gen are out too.

Haswell refresh is not 5th gen core chips, they are refreshed 4th gens. The 5th gen will be broadwell

if you have already had i7 2600K , keep it . Otherwise , get i7 4790K or i5 4690K , what is within the budget .
