Hi Guys,

Currently, I am using I3-4130 and MSI B85m-P33 and I am planning to replace it with MSI H97 Gaming 3 motherboard and i5-4690, now my question is, do I need to reinstall my OS if I replace my motherboard and CPU? I know this has been asked many times but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Many thanks in advance!

reinstall, if you have a retail version and it will not activate call Microsoft and tell them you transferred the license to a new build and they will get you activated. Last time I did that, it took 3 minutes. They just had me give them my old key and read a new key to me and had me type it in while I was on the phone. So, have your machine running and ready to type in the key and they will make sure it works.

It seems to be a bit up in the air, the answer is probably yes but you might get away with it with windows 8. As you are changing chipset I would say yes. Assume Yes and you might be lucky and not have to, although windows registers with the board some people have changed boards and not had to change it but seeing as you are changing chipset you probably will have to.

It's not an OEM version. Hmm looks like I have no choice but to try my luck.

Thank you so much for giving me some ideas of what's going to happen and what I should do. Guess my only option is to test if it will work, if not, just call Microsoft.
