ASUS makes the most durable motherboards. The R9 290 is better than the GTX 970. You can also get a maximus vii Ranger (if you can find them) . The Ranger is a solid 150$ ROG motherboard such as SupremeFX, Intel LAN, SLI or CFX , Keybot, 12 phase VRM

Everyone praises ASUS, but they have the same DOA/return rate as MSI. EXACTLY THE SAME. basically any of the big 4 are perfectly fine and the same quality.

I personally recommend Gigabyte Motherboards for the $100-$140 range. I have had the best luck with these and aside from MSI, have the most user friendly BIOS.
