Hi,

I have a HP XW8600 workstation with 2 Intel Xeon X5470/ 3.33 GHz,1333 MHz FSB, 120 watt (Quad Cores) processors. I am looking to upgrade to the fastest processor available for this socket (LGA 771), which I understand is the Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz,1600 MHz FSB, 150 watt processor.

Question is: I am currently running 16gb (8x2gb) of PC2-5300 667MHz RAM; will I be able to run this new processor with my existing RAM? If not, can you tell me what kind of RAM I will need?

Thanks!

According to the HP product bulletin, the X5492 is compatible with the xw8600. I don't see any restrictions on using 1333 memory with 1600 FSB CPUs. They do say 1600 RAM is only for with the 1600 FSB CPUs but no prohibitions on using the slower RAM with the faster CPUs.

You would be going up 20W per CPU and as MeteorsRaining said, only gaining less than 100Mhz. Unless somebody is GIVING you the CPUs, I also don't see any benefit.

It would gain 70mhz per chip x 2 processors = 140mhz overall; we are talking used chips purchased cheap.

If you go through with the upgrade, I'll buy your x5470's....

I'm actually going the opposite direction. I'm downgrading from a pair of X5472's to a pair of X5470's. I'm dumping my 800MHz ram and going with 667instead. I've got 2 identical machines, one with a pair of the x5470's and one with a pair of the x5472's. The x5470's are noticeably faster, even with the slower ram.
