In case it's useful to anyone the other one of these devices is the display audio (i.e. HDMI). I installed the latest VGA driver package from the Asus site quoted in the thread (ignoring a popup stating that two of my current drivers were newer than the ones being installed), and all was happy in device manager, sound coming out of my monitor.

THANK YOU!!! I spent hours and days trying to get the "HDMI No Sound" issue resolved. It was not the Sound driver at all, simply a VGA driver issue. The "Intel(R) Graphics Accelerator Driver V10.18.10.3910 for Windows 7/8/8.1 64bit.(WHQL) " driver worked flawlessly. After installing the VGA driver, I chose to restart my pc LATER. Immediately after that I Uninstalled the Realtek Audio Driver I had downloaded first (before uninstalling the Realtek Audio Driver the sound was coming from my tv full of static) from the Asus website. After that I simply rebooted my pc and like magic, the sound came out of my HDMI TV and was already set as the default device. Very happy :) since I thought my mobo was faulty.

This is an old post but I thought I'd share my experience.

I have an ASUS Z97-K which exhibited the same problem. No audio from either the front panel 3.5mm headphone jack, nor the rear green jack I use for the speakers. I tried many things to get the audio hardware to work. I had just assembled the motherboard, RAM, CPU, and attached all the cables. I didn't want to have to return the motherboard and wait a week for a new one.

I reloaded all drivers, downloaded fresh audio drivers and loaded them. I must have reloaded the drivers five times. I poked around in the BIOS turning the audio off, rebooting, then turning the audio on and rebooted. I kept trying both the speakers and earphones a number of times.

I began to fill out the return forms on Amazon to return the board, while I kept working on the issue.

Finally I unplugged the header that leads from the motherboard to the front panel. I went around to the back of the computer, pulled the speaker cord out, and plugged the earphones in. SOUND! After more than two hours I finally heard the movie I had been playing on youtube.com. Plugging the speakers back in there was no sound from them. I have owned those speakers for over 10 years and never had problems with them. I unplugged the power cable to the speakers and plugged them back in. SOUND! Finally reattaching the front panel header, right back where it had been, everything now worked.

I can't say I have any idea what fixed the problem. All I know is for over two hours I thought the motherboard was bad. It wasn't. As I type this I'm listening to the audio from a documentary I'm watching in the corner of the screen.

My suggestion is don't give up.

THIS!

Cant believe I got it working after trying every audio driver known to man. The VGA intel one worked like a charm. Thanks!
