I game on a 1080p monitor, and am looking to get a GTX 970 so that I can futureproof myself for future games now that the PS4/XOne are out. I also wouldn't mind constant 60fps (ie. min FPS of 60). My current HD7950 can do 1080p gaming fine, but I'm thinking some current and future games won't give me minimum FPS close enough to 60FPS. Do you guys think the 970 is overkill for me?

I just upgraded from a 660ti, which performs very close to the 7950. I get about double the performance which is great, but I am also playing on 144hz. At 1080p 60hz I really dont see a large need to upgrade. AMD should be coming out with 20nm at the beginning of next year. You could wait until then to upgrade to either AMD or nvidia if they come out with a counterpart card or lower the prices of the current 900 series.

I usually decide to upgrade when my current card cant play the games I want at the resolution, frame rate, and detail I want. If it can do that now then dont upgrade. If it cannot, then go ahead and upgrade.

Compare the 280 and 970. The 280 is a rebadge of the 7950 and is slightly faster.

It will be a nice upgrade and should max games at 1080p for quite a while. It's not really needed at 1080p right now, but for future games, it will be better than a 7950.

If it cannot, then go ahead and upgrade. Of course, the dips to 40FPS only really affects BF4 multiplayer in terms of gameplay. But having a smooth 60FPS is still attractive to me in other games. Dipping from 60 to 40FPS is very noticeable (I'm sure you all know).

I have my 7950 OCd to 1150MHz, but find with high/max settings on some games (no or FXAA), that I can get dips to 40-45 FPS. Games like BF4 (multiplayer), ACIV, Watch Dogs, and obv Crysis 3. I'm just thinking might get worse with future games. Even with upcoming games like DA:I, AC:U, FC4, Witcher 3, etc.

If you dont like having to lower the settings to play at 60fps then go ahead and upgrade. The 970 will max out every game at 1080p and stay above 60fps so it should last a few years at least.
