So when i am looking up GPUs, i see that the 780 ti is usually much more expensive that the 970 and thought : isn't the higher number always better? but then why is the 780 ti priced higher?

anyone explain?

More about : geforce gtx 780ti gtx 970

The 780 ti is better and the price will likely stay the same as long as it stays in stock.

The higher number isn't always better. For example Nvidia GTX 680> GTX 760. My theory as to why the GTX 9xx series is so cheap in comparison to the 7xx series is that the new GTX 9xx is physically cheaper to make. For one it runs on less power so I would assume that improves yields. Second you'll notice the memory bus isn't as high on the GTX 9xx series (256 vs. 384). From what I understand Nvidia uses a lossless compression to achieve similar performance. This reduces the trace count and board complexity. If your interested Hardocp does a good write up on it.
