Hello,

I'm switching from a Maximus V Formula to a Maximus V Gene, and was wondering if they use the same drivers. When I switch the motherboards will I need to delete and reinstall drivers? And will I need to reinstall Windows 7?

Thanks for your help.

More then likely you will have to do all of the above, at least that has been my experience when changing models of boards. A call to ASUS support might be worth your time, but they will probably tell you the same.
You might luck out, but I have used ASUS boards almost exclusively for the last 15+ years (tried a different brand once and it failed at 2 years) and have always had to reinstall or, one time with Windows 98, repair the OS; and always have had to install new driver. Even when the change was the same board but a 'revised' edition.

For best results, it's advisable to reinstall Windows when changing mobo's. Not doing so can lead to a lot of headaches, but sometimes you can get away with it. Personally, I always reinstall, besides avoiding problems with drivers, I like the speed of a fresh Windows install.

Windows attaches the key to the serial read from the BIOS, so without contacting Microsoft you will need to do a fresh install.

The chipset on those motherboards differ greatly, mainly because the controllers on the Gene have less power, due to the fact it doesn't have to support as much hardware.

My advice, fresh install. You may be able to get away with not having to but the reality is you will always have random errors because the drivers are looking for something thats not there or talking to components that don't understand it. You won't be able to uninstall them before adding the new ones either. Just a heads up, an external drive is essential accessory for anyone who does their own tech work or builds.

Make a good backup or two and simply install the drive, if Win7 or 8 (7 is better) it will examine the mobo, install default drivers and normally boot to Win. You then load all the latest drivers for your new mobo from the mobo website, next run a good Registry cleaner (Wise has a free edition of theirs), then run Win Update and finally will prob have to reactivate Win...generally it's a fairly painless process

Just reinstall windows when change mobo and use disk included in your mobo package to install drivers. After that i would recommend visit this link here: http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/MAXIMUS_V_GENE/HelpDesk_Download/ to download the latest drivers for your new mobo. They obviously dont use the same drivers cause they have different bridges and versions of drivers. Windows wont boot when you change mobo so thats why you need to reinstall windows.
