Hi chaps Ive just bought a hi res monitor its a DGM IPS 2701 27" my goal is to to play uhd media, Ive downloaded some uhd movie trailers to try out but my pc wont play them, my pc displays the new resolution fine can watch 1080p media no problems but when it comes to 4k the titles roll then when the movie starts its freezes pixilates obviously its struggling to play it, I bought a cheap £8 dp to miniport cable from my monitor to my graphics card, after about 15mins I rebooted my pc and a cpu overheating error appeared in the start up process, this seemed to get worse as I couldn't boot up into windows at all, I disconnected miniport cable changed input back to dvi left pc for 15 mins then booted it up and everything was fine my pc spec is :-

Asus P7P55D-LX mb
Intel Core i7 860 2.80 gig cpu
Amd Radeon HD 6900 Series display adapter
12 gig ram
120 gig ssd Samsung hd
Do I need to upgrade my cpu and graphics? and information would be really appreciated.

The i7 860 is a tier 3 cpu per http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-o...
About the same power as a FX8120. So it should be OK.

Your monitor is 1440p (not 4K) per http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors/381025/dgm-ips-...

This would strain the GPU (HD6900 what?) but shouldn't worry your CPU.

You should check your CPU - voltage, temps, clocks, fan speed etc through bios.

If your CPU is running at 40C max idle and 60C max gaming, then it should be working OK.

If not, blow the case out with compressed air, bump up the cpu cooler fan speed and get rid of any cpu overclcoks.

If still not OK, re-seat the CPU cooler (Google it).

If still not OK, get a better CPU cooler.

Thank you for the reply my cpu is running at 48 to 50c on idle and when I load it the temp goes to 85 to 90c I resat the cpu about 4 months ago using arctic silver, nothing is overclocked in the bios that iam aware of, most of the settings seem to be automatic, ive installed speedfan which is giving me a lot of info
3vsb 3.44v 3Vcc 3.39v
Vbat 2.03v +3.3v 3.39v
Vcore 0.86v +5v 5.09v

+12v 11.62v
AVcc 3.39V

GPU Vddc 0.90v

my graphics card is an RADEON HD 6950
Its a stock fan that came with the cpu running at 2009 rpm.

Your PSU needs replacing 11.62V is way too low for the 12V rail.

Get a better CPU cooler eg Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO $30 at Newegg

It mainly depends on exactly what HD6900 graphics card you have eg HD6950, 6550, etc etc
