PC will output through Nvidia GPU, but not through motherboard

I just built my PC yesterday and went through a bit of fretting that my GPU (GTX 770) wasn't working. When testing the PC being plugged in through the motherboard HDMI without the GPU, it worked fine, however, when plugging into the TV with the GPU in, it turned out to do nothing (similar to the effect of the causes in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems). When trying to plug it in through my GPU, it seemed to work perfectly.

Currently, I don't have the nvidia drivers installed so it's showing up as just GK104 where ever I look and comes out as having only 256mb of VRAM, however, I imagine installing the drivers should fix that. It's possible this is also why there's no sound through the video card, however, the system does pick up that Nvidia does have sound, but that it's not connected. I also have a similar issue with realtek sound from the motherboard (MSI Z97-G55 SLI), however, I've installed the drivers, but it still says that it's not plugged in unless I've got some headphones plugged in, but then sound still doesn't come through.

I will be giving my PC a fresh install of windows 8, but I feel this could be an issue that remains after that. I've made sure the HD Audio from the case is plugged into the motherboard, so I imagine that shouldn't be an issue...

Is there any issue it could possibly be?

Long story short...when plugging the GPU in, are you putting the HDMI into the HDMI port of the motherboard or your graphics card ;)

^^Nm i re read and what you are asking is confusing me. What are you asking? That your GPU is not displaying or your motherboards onboard graphics aren't displaying? Because reading your opening sentence suggests your're talking about the GTX 770 not working but your heading suggests your motherboards onboard graphics aren't working?

I don't see why you're trying to display through your motherboard? Just put your gpu in and make sure your're putting your hdmi cable from your tv into the HDMI port of the GPU itself...not the HDMI on the motherboard (I've accidently done that a few times).

Sorry >.<

What I'm saying is that plugging into the motherboard means nothing will display on screen.
But Intel HD graphics never shows up when plugged into my Nvidia card, would I not save power if I could use just Intel?
