Hey guys, looking to upgrade my AMD Phenom II x4 955. Thinking of switching to Intel, the PC will be used mostly for gaming.

Not currently at home, but I'm using a 660ti I believe, 8GB RAM.
What kind of cpu/mobo combo should I look at?

Thanks in advance.

What kind of games? Do you plan to SLI in the future or overclock?

No SLI, overclock probably, and I don't want to go higher than $500

Games I'm currently playing: Archeage, Diablo 3, League of Legends, various Steam games and FPS games like Warframe, Planetside 2. Looking to get Mordor as well.

that GPU definetly cant catch up with the fastest CPUs out there, I'd reccomend something more conservative like i5-4590,i5-4460, G3258. If planning to OC G3258 (and if you pick it it means that you do) I'd get Z97 board,as for i5's H97s would be more than enough. Whatever you'll do not even look at celeron,i3 and i7. they're just not for you. Celeron oriented towards cheap office PCs which handles basic tasks with ease, i3 is for the idiots which ain't know what they're buying but want a home PC so shop-assistants happily suggests them this overpriced dual-core,i7 is for people who just want the best of the best, spit in face of diminishing returns and earn more $ than they can spend.

If you can use your old parts ect heres a simple build that will overclock and its intel AMD SOCKET 3+ is dead reuse your hard drive as storeage, dvd drive and your gpu or what ever else this will get you started just fine.

I was thinking of i5 to begin with but I also really want that buttery-smooth gaming experience. I can play games alright with what I have but I don't like having to drop to medium settings and still have frame issues, especially in big groups of players/big areas.

I also heard i7 isn't worth it for gaming anyway.

Your over paying for a I 7 and for a 500 budget you prob wont get a lot for that if you add a I 7 a I 5 will be more then enough to please you and the k version I picked can be overclocked... Most intel folks go with the I 5 for gaming but if you have to have the best of the best you need to read some of toms forums the I 7 has diminishing returns for the cost of the cpu alone.

Get a I 5 and put money towards a better GPU AT A LATER TIME.

Get an i5 4690K and a MSI Z97 GAMING 3 or ASUS Z97 A and you'll be golden.

Looks like the top i5 on Newegg is Intel Core i5-3570K. K for overclock correct? Should I still pair this one with Z97?

*edit* i5-4690K with Z97?

The i5 3570k is decent but why get last gen when the new gen cost the same and performs better?
K means it can overclock.
See you just edit your post and yeah get that i5 with a Z97 mobo
