Hi, so I'm a first time builder, a Brit living in China. Being illiterate in Chinese, I thought I'd go for a super budget build, around 1000 RMB, as on taobao.com, (a Chinese ebay/amazon type thing) you can get really old parts ridiculously cheap, but its a little tricky, as item descriptions can be pretty unreliable. All this particular build needs to do is run MS Office, and browse the web, as I use my laptop for games and videos.

This may be a silly question but is it worth it? Building a really old pc, just for an experiment, to see how it all works? I don't really want to spend that much on my first build, and I don't mind building a cheap 'disposable' pc (1000 RMB is around £100), just to find out if this building my own pc business is for me...

So the parts I've shortlisted at the moment:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+, http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=40430655500
Motherboard: super H8SMi-2, http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=36481985957

Now as I say, I am brand new at this, so maybe this is another silly question, but when I looked up the motherboard,

http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron1000/MCP55/H8SMi-2.cfm

it says it's compatible with a Quad-Core AMD Opteron CPU. But as the socket type is still AM2, does that mean it would still work with the ancient CPU I've mentioned above?

Also, research on the AMD website says this CPU is AM2, but in the item description on taobao it says FM1? Should I just ignore that part?

Apologies for the long post, but where every other part I would need depends on the motherboard, I would appreciate it if anyone could clarify so that I can move ahead with the planning.

Solution
this is the cheapest i can come up with

cpu: sempron 2650
motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-AM1M-S2H
2 gb ram from kingston/crucial/corsair/gskill
a 320/500gb harddrive - cheapest you find
a corsair cx430 power supply
the cheapest case you can find!
