Before I wipe out any OS, I back up ALL files I don't want to lose. Even with partitions, I've had OS reinstalls wipe out the data partition. Again, if you don't want to lose the file, back it up before messing with the OS.

You can use a sysprep image of your Windows installation. However, depending on the reason for your reinstall, this may be ineffective. If you're reinstalling due to virus infection or corruption, sysprep is not the way to go. Sysprep images will clear your user profile, however, so backup your libraries if you choose to do that.

One way is to use a restore point if you have made one.
Another one is a refresh. This will only affect the OS drive and not the data drive. I would back up all data either way.

Apart from those 2 I can't think of any others.

I think preactivated = pirate version = thread locked on toms hardware for rule violation

Sure boot the drive off another windows image, take ownership of the directories you want to save and rename them to another name.

ie: rename c:\windows to c:\oldwindows.
rename c:\users to c:\oldusers

now when you install windows 8.x it will ignore these directories unless you tell it to format the drive.

I agree.
Pre-activated = Pirated and we wont help with that.
