Hi,

I'm about to build a new computer for intensive research and writing and some gaming. Could you critique this build? It's my first build but I've done some research. My current computer is a 4-year old AMD Athlon II. I'm not really interested in overclocking because I think the learning curve is more than I have time to tackle right now. Maybe for the next build xD.

Proposed new build:
MOBO: ASUS H97M-Plus
CPU: Intel i5-4690
GPU: R9 270
COOLER: CM Hyper 212 Evo
PSU: Corsair CX500 Bronze
CASE: Fractal Design Arc Mini R2
RAM: 2x4GB of the G.Skill Cas 9 1600.
SSD: Samsung Evo 840 120 GB (for OS)
HD: WD Blue 1 TB

Most of the time I'm researching and writing with say, 3 word documents, 2-3 pdfs, and a bunch of internet cites running. But I also want the option of picking up a new game and having it run okay. Dark Souls II maybe or something like that.

I've read so many postings from this blog and am really appreciative about all the knowledge that's being kicked around here.

Best regards,

Joe G.

You can build the system now, but you can wait. For me personaly I would wait till new year, Intel will launch their broadwell CPU. It wont perform better though, it just will be brand new, and more power efficient.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. It seems like the goal is to find better deals on non-GPU parts and then use the difference on a better GPU. I was just wondering, would it make sense to wait until Thanksgiving to invest in a GPU? Are there likely to be better deals with new ones rolling out?

maybe... I'd say if you can get a gtx 970 then get it now... its one of the best price to performance ratios right now... and people are buying them like crazy.. I fear prices on that one will start rising pretty soon...
