Looking for help, my system freezes and requires a hard shut down or reset.

CPU - AMD FX Vishera 9590
MB - ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaw X Series 32 GB
GPU - ASUS Direct CU II Radeon R9 270x 2GB
PSU - Cougar GX1050
OS - Windows 8.1 Pro 64

For a couple weeks now I have been trying to sort this out. I still don't know the exact cause as it can happen at anytime, but it seems as though anytime there is a decent load on the system it freezes. All sound stops, no input device responds at all, the hard drive light stops (sometimes it stops while the light is on and it will just stay on), all fans continue running. But I either have to hard reset or shut down.

I have swapped in known working RAM, videos card, and I've tried 4 different hard drives. I had just installed a new SSD and a fresh windows install, so all drivers and updates are new. I have updated the SSD firmware as well as the mobo bios. I have also tried 4 different SATA cables in all of the slots.

I am thinking it is down to the mobo, CPU, or PSU (but please ask about everything). I tried Prime95 to see if that would give me any insight into the CPU, but true to form it froze as soon as the test began. Tomorrow I am going to pick up a PSU tester and some thermal paste so I can give the PSU a test and take a look at the CPU. But please ask any questions as it may help bring another issue to light.

Thanks a lot to anyone who helps out, I am at the end of my rope and starting to think about just scrapping this and building a new computer.

I have a cooler master seidon 240m liquid cooler. I haven't checked temps since it wasn't really acting like a temp issue. But you are right that I should check it. As soon as I get home I will run it a few times and get some numbers.

To answer Velo, RAM usage is usually around 12-18%. I will have to check on HDD usage. I did open the tower and clean what little amount of dust there was out, although this morning on my way out the door I noticed a decent amount stuck in the radiator so that will get cleaned out as soon as I get home.

So I got my temps right at a crash. The mobo reports the main body temp at 33C and the CPU at 45C. The CPU reports at 41C. This freeze also occurred about 20 seconds after logging into windows after being shut down for almost 10 hours.

I don't know as I am not a desktop expert. I thought it was the hdd but you have tried several of them. Then I thought it was windows playing up but you have installed a new one. It could be that some of the items don't mix well with each other when there is a lot of load. It could also be dust but you are going to clean it out. Let me know what happens after you have cleaned it.

Cleaning the dust didn't help, unfortunately. I also forgot to mention I originally built this computer in the beginning of the year and have not had an issue up until now. So that rules out incompatible components, and leaves a failing one in my book (but my knowledge is limited).

Like I said before I am not really sure what is wrong. Maybe someone else can help you.

Hooked up a PSU tester and all voltages are steady at a very healthy level (all were almost dead center of "healthy range"). Now I am going to pull the cpu out and look for any physical signs.

Well upon inspection of the cpu I did notice a tiny little circular mark (if you pull up a picture of the cpu it is next to the top right corner of the qr code). The thermal paste was still good for the most part. So I cleaned the mating area, reapplied paste, and put it back together. The computer ran longer than usual but inevitably froze.

I am officially out of ideas unless its the mobo. in which case i have absolutely no way of testing.

It seems to not freeze while pretty much at idle while disconnected from the wifi. If i connect to wifi it will freeze after a couple to several minutes. Being connect does use extra processing power so this makes sense, but i thought id throw that in there in case it helps. But doing pretty much anything will freeze it.

That doesn't sound very good to me, that is right where some of the cores are (if you're sure it wasn't there before? I seem to remember that my Phenom II x4 955 BE had what looked like a scorch mark). It's going to be awkward to get an accurate temperature reading on each individual module if your computer keeps crashing. I would try parking cores and then test each one individually.
