My computer has been going good for a couple of months now.
I did a system recovery after the default programs all started linking to Windows Media Player.

The past few days my computer has been taking a ages to load as in its stuck on the ASUS bios screen for about a century.
The Boot_Device_Led is also red and in the manual it claims that:
'If an error is found, the critical component's LED stays lit up until the problem is solved.'

Many people have already asked this question but I think my case hopefully has more hope.

My motherboard is the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0:

My computer does load after about 20 minutes but that's not usual

The boot order is/i think it is CPU, RAM, Vga card then hard disk

I cant see because I can't get into the BIOS even if I plug my keyboard into the green USB at the back which I think is bios flashback./

Is it possible that something is wrong with any of the major parts. Or is it possible that I've applied thermal paste wrong.

Or is it just my hdd not working.

Well, you don't need a HDD in order to boot into BIOS so there is definitely a problem somewhere between tour CPU, RAM and Motherboard. Try resetting your motherboard by getting out then replace your CMOS battery

Tell me how did you applied thermal paste, is your CPU heatsink getting hot ?

I don't think it's getting warm it's staying at around 35 celcius. I put a pea on of thermal paste but when I was putting my CM Hyper 212 I may have smudged it around.

But I now have another problem:

My default programs have all turned into shortcuts for Windows Media Center.

I have tried:

- System Recovery
- Preventing Windows Media Center access but this just stops it from loading anything.
- I tried to reset the default programs but it didn't do much

If I were to get a genuine version of say Windows 8.1, would my problem go away?

I haven't downloaded any third party applications to fix my problem yet

At the software point I can't help you. But as i said, you shouldn't have problem with your motherboard if your HDD is faulty. To boot BIOS you need a motherboard, Ram and a CPU
