Hello!

As the title suggests, my computer crashes without a bluescreen. I have checked the minidump folder and there is nothing. Last one was in May of this year. If you go back to check my previous posts, you can see that I have had problems with crashing before. That time it was my ram that was faulty. This time… It’s not as easy.

Since I’m not getting any bluescreens, I can’t identify the problem. But I will do my best to explain what is happening.

It all began with my computer starting, but my screen didn’t recieve a signal. It did not work to turn it off via holding down the power button on my chassi. Therefore I pulled the plug. I tried again and it worked, no problems, until saturday 4/10.

My computer was on and I was in another room watching a movie. I came upstairs to find my computer frozen. My main screen said “no signal” and my secondary screen was on, but frozen. I couldn’t turn my computer off, but held down the power button on my chassi.

I didn’t think about it too much then, I just accepted it and moved on.

I played games all sunday, but after about 8 hours of the PC running, the main screen frooze and the sound I hear in my headphones before the freeze looped really intensly. The only way to turn it was was holding down the power button on the chassi.

I came home from school yesterday Monday 6/10, and plugged my pc into the wall. I dont have it plugged in because i have more electronics and I think it might catch fire if I have it plugged in at all times.

So, I came home and turned it on, but it did the no signal and can’t turn it off. I had to pull the cord. I plugged it back in, and clicked the power button on my chassi. The computer turned on and off within a second. I tried clicking the power button again, but no power. I the only was was to either “Clear CMOS”, pull the cord, or flip the PSU power switch off and on again.

I had read up on why this happened. Many said it was my ram, so I pulled a stick out, and clicked Clear CMOS. The PC booted up without me even clicking the power button. It was like it wanted to start but couldn’t, because the ram DIMM was stopping it, and removing it made it go…

At this point I did memtest, one cycle, no errors.

I put the DIMM back in and it continued to work. Until today, Tuesday 8/10. I crashed again. This time though, it was just like the electricity wasn’t enough. The computer just dies, no freezing, just power off. And I couldnt turn it on again. I tried to pull the same DIMM out, and it started. I tried to go with my computer with only one stick of ram. It has worked for me in the past… But this time, it didn’t. I crashed again.

Specs:
Asrock z77 Extreme4 motherboard
i5 3570k no overclock.
Radeon HD 7950 OC. Slight overclock from CCC.
8GB Corsair Vengence 1600Mhz RAM, no overclock, nothing done in BIOS with them.
Corsair CX750M PSU
SSD for my OS
HDD for files.

The solutions I found were:
Update Drivers (CPU, BIOS, Graphics Card, sound drivers). I updated sound and graphics. My BIOS was up to date and my CPU, to be honest I couldn’t find what to update…

MemTest86: I am well aware of what memtest is, and I tried it, since some people with this problem got told to fix it like that. No errors.

Removing RAM and reseating RAM

Checking temps, they are normal.

Sorry for the long post, but I think it’s important you all get to know everything.
If you have any questions, just ask, ill try to answer them as quick as I can.

Thank you for reading this and potentially helping me.

To me it really sounds a like a RAM issue, I know you ran the memtest, but did you let it run the full set of test? Just leave your computer on all night and leave that running to see if an error could be found. I would also recommend testing one stick of ram at a time, try switching up the slots too. Just play the game that crashed with 4GB of memory for a while, see if there is a crash. It might be just 1 stick of ram that became faulty. Also another thing came to mind is virtual memory, did you by any chance disable it or manually set it really low?

try putting the ram in next slot and place the ram tightly in that slot...see if it helps
try inserting your graphic card tightly also...

But, the computer doesn't just crash when in games, it's when I for example watch a stream, write some school-work, go to reddit, all of those things.. I don't even know what virtual memory is, so.... I don't know how I can have set it really low, but, tell me where I can find it and I can check.

Ok, so I tried to put in the second bit of ram again, and it just started and stopped. I then took it out again, so the working bit was alone like before, and then it didn't work either. I the not broken bit of ram in all four slots, with clearing CMOS every time in between. It didn't work. I then tried the broken bit of ram in all four slots, didn't work for number one and number two. Butit worked for number 3 and 4. Then I tried the broken bit of ram in 1 and 2 again, and it worked.

I then tried the working bit of ram (the one I had in alone from the beginning) again, since it was broke suddenly after I tried both together and now thats woking alone in all slots.

It's like my computer gave up for a bit and then came back... what is this even?

Im gonna try to put both pieces together again.

I tried both pieces, and it worked again. This exact thing happened a couple of days ago, and then it broke again.

Any other tips? The tip of having it run memtest overnight wont work, the pc is in the room I sleep in..

Look in event viewer under windows logs / system. For any errors . About the time it happens

Let's call the 2 rams ram A and B. Sometimes the dual-channel pack is weird like that, A might only work in 1&2 and B might work in 3&4, either way if you consistently get crashes it is most likely a RAM issue and I would contact Corsair support to get replacement RAMs. If you were previously using slots 1 and 3, now try using 2 and 4. Put the "broken" one that works in 1&2 into either 1 or 2, whichever you weren't using before, and put the other stick of RAM into either 3 or 4. So at the end, you should have either 1&3 or 2&4.

Update: Just make sure that the two stick of RAM is plugged into the same color slots, because that usually indicates the dual-channel setup.

As for virtual memory, if you didn't touch it, it shouldn't be a problem, but to check you can follow this link:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2013/01/07...

Just see if it is system managed, and do not change any settings.

Paul NZ, my pc crashed once today at 18:55, I told my friend on skype that I was back 18:56

There were 2 things under that time that happened. One critical and one error.

Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power doesn't mean it's the PSU's problem, it just means that the computer is forcibly shutdown.
Link:
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2028504#method2

when a program freezes and sound is looped, it is usually a memory problem.

It never hurts to try working components to troubleshoot, but that doesn't mean buying something new will definitely resolve the problem.

well, I can't do anything about this until friday, are there any ways I can test to assure myself that something specific is the problem? Like run a program? I'll try memtest over tomorrows schoolday. Ill try both sticks. Does that seem good? what else should I do?

Do that first, then buy a power supply and a pair of RAM at a retail store over the weekend, test with new PSU/RAM separately (handle with care so you can still return them), then return whatever that is not necessary to replace and get a full refund. (Still my personal experience tells me that unless your computer just completely shuts down or restarts randomly, you usually don't have to worry about the PSU)

then I should really worry about the PSU, because my pc is restarting randomly all the time

Ah, there is the piece of info that was missing, in this case try buying just a PSU and test with your system.

Actually, thinking back, I recently helped my friend replace his PSU because of random shutdowns and restarts his PSU was: CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX750 (CMPSU-750AX) 750W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply, so it could be that they break easily. This time try getting another brand, I've had good luck with CoolerMaster, Antec and EVGA so far.

I'm starting to think it is my PSU too. I start my computer and my chassi fans start running, but my cpu fan and gpu sfan don', so, something must be broken inside the PSU... Is that valid thinking?

But also, I am noticing that when I put a specific bit of ram into slot 3, everything starts working.

I ave wo DIMMs of ram, one with a tiny dot on, that I put there to tell them apart. The one without a dot is the one inside my chassi now. I tried both of the strips of ram, and when I put the ram with no dot on it into slot 3 on my pc, it started...

So it also seems to be a problem with ram...

Yea, could be both, might just have to get both PSU and RAM over the weekend and test separately

yeah, I will, I have a friend who I will take it all from, so thats ok. While time is going though, I realised a little thing. My motherboard (being awesome) has an error-code display, and I noticed that it displayed error 53 "Memory Inisialisation Error: No useable memory detected".

Most definitly an issue with ram too then..

October 10, 2014 6:13:52 AM

So, it's been some time, haven't tested anyone elses ram or PSU yet, but, I realised that when I have both my sticks of ram in my computer, it only recognises 4GB. When I saw the erroe 53 message from my last post, I tested to put my second bit of RAM into the PC too. Then it only saw 4 GB of ram and it said it was single channel, so my ram slot might be broken?

Also, after I did that, my computer hasent crashed yet, which is both great, and terrifying.

l
October 10, 2014 9:09:13 AM

It could just be that the RAM itself is broken, it is possible that the slot might be broken too, but that chance is much smaller than a broken stick of RAM. I would wait til you test with other RAM and PSU first.
m
0
l
October 11, 2014 4:10:29 AM

Ok, so the 4Gb problem was false, I had put the stick in not completely... and also, my pc hasn't crashed now for 3 days, so I do't know how I was supposed to troubleshoot if it doesn't crash...
m
0
l
October 11, 2014 4:13:08 AM

Since my PC hasen't crashed, I can't change parts to see if it works... So, therefore I can't further test... Which sucks

October 11, 2014 11:23:19 AM

So, if now that your RAM configuration works, 8GB without crash or any random resets, I believe your computer is fine. In the case if it randomly resets again, I would replace the PSU.
