I was looking to buy the AMD fx 9590 for a gaming pc, but then people said i would be better off with the i5 4690...i dont get how that is considering the fx has 8 cores and runs at 4.7ghz and the i5 runs at 3.5ghz and is a 4 core...Then i asked them how is this and they said it is because the i5 has a better architecture and i have no idea what it is so could someone please help me out?

Go intel.

Plus the 9590 runs so hot and uses so much power you need to meet these requirements.

Your choices for the 9590:

ASRock 990FX Extreme9
Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R4.0
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7
MSI 990FXA-GD80V2

Warning: This power draw of this CPU is almost twice that of the average CPU. Due to this, AMD recommends using at minimum a 1000W power supply. For cooling, AMD recommends using either either closed loop liquid cooling or full system liquid cooling.

The arcitecture is the resource sharing structure (in simple terms) of the different cores. In AMD, 2 cores are housed in a single module, and both the cores share the same resources, FX 9 has 8 logical cores in 4 modules and 4 FPU (Floating Point Units), whereas i5 has 4 cores in 4 modules, meaning more resources to each core, resulting in better single core perofrmance. i5's 3.5GHz is stronger than FX 9's 4.7GHz on stock. Also, FX 9 is 220W TDP CPU, requires water cooling, high end pricy MoBo, not worth it, you can get i7 which ends the competition with HyperThreads. i5 can OC with a $30 cooler, and $100 MoBo. The same setup costs $300 for FX 9.

FX 9 is unstable on OCing, doesn't go past 5GHz easily, eats a lot of energy, and doesn't provide the desired performance of even i5's level. That is why a true quad cored i5 is preferred.

Thank you man helped alot, but what about multi-tasking? wouldnt the more cores be better? And how is the 3.5 Ghz better?

Not necessarily, there is no advantage of 8 cores with 4 floating points, can't address more than 4 cores at a time, same as a quad core. And 3.5Ghz is from a single core housed in a single module, and the 4.7GHz is from a core which does run at the stated speed but can't provide the stated performance, due to having less resources.

8 cores is more of an eye-catching selling point than advantage in real world use for the vast majority of people. If you are gaming, there is simply no better platform than the i5 for great performance/value, or the i7 for just flat-out all there is performance.
Intel processors simply do more work per clock cycle, and they do it much more effectively.

I am not bias either just because I have an i7. I stuck with and used AMD for many years, from a 133mhz DX overdrive processor through the Thunderbird years, a couple of Athlons in the 3200+ era of chips and an Athlon 4600 x2 to a 940 Phenom II and finally a 965BE. But today, Intel simply dominates the field for gaming, and just about everything else. Cant really even claim AMD as a budget build any longer. There are just better choices.

Microarchitecture is comparatively similar to real architecture.

A street with eight small single-detached bungalows is a street with eight houses.

A street with four three storey mansions is a street with four houses.

Which street would you rather live on?

Numbers such as operating frequency and core count only tell a fraction of the story. Intel's Core i7 series microarchitecture is simply significantly more advanced than AMD's FX series microarchitecture. Each Intel Haswell (4000 series) core is approximately twice as capable as an AMD FX series core. That really only touches the tip of the iceberg though as there are many other differences which give Intel an edge.
