OK boys and girls! I just moved into a new building, they offer complementary WiFi, the signal is not the best so I purchase an Asus rt-n66u to use as an extender/repeater.
I'm having problems installing the router, it doesn't connect to the Internet. Now.... Do I need a hard connection to the Internet to make the router work or can the router pick up the WiFi signal wirelesly and repeat it? Sorry if it is a "duh" type of question... Networks are not my strong suit.

Thanks!

It can run in repeater mode you just turn it on basically.

Still it may not help. If a pc gets bad signal and you put a router in the same spot it too will get a bad signal. It will then attempt to repeat this bad signal making it even worse. A repeater must be placed in a area that it gets good signal which it can then extend to the area that gets poor or no signal from the main router.

You may also have issues if the building wifi does not support WDS. This is what allows multiple devices to attach behind a repeater.
