Why isnt a top notch sound card from 5 years ago, just as good as the flagship model of today?

Once you get digital sound, you cant really improve on sound quality and we did that a long time ago.

So how is it that people are fooling for new expensive sound card models and always buying at least one of the more modern sound cards when they could be using a dirt cheap 5+ year old card.

Are people just suckers for advertisers?

Or is there more to it?

It seems to me that with graphics cards there is a legit need to improve and pay, because its so demanding and difficult to process all the data and details that go into ever improving graphics. But sound surely not?

For everyday use, I don't think their is much difference.

Unless you have a surround system or such.
A basic card if fine.

If you do music, you might need a more expensive one.
