The WD drive has worked fine until I recently transferred over 200 pictures from my iPhone to clear up space on the phone. Now I cannot open the drive or access any pictures that were saved to the drive. Message indicated format drive to use. I would hate to format knowing everything saved on the drive would be deleted. Any help and information you can provide would be appreciated. Afraid all the pictures and videos saved on the drive are gone-lost.

Hi there NeilMag,

You can also run chkdsk (drive letter): /F in the Command Prompt. This might fix your issue if it is some file system error. If this does not help, you can try recovering the data with the software tools the other guys proposed.

Hope this will help,

Sorry but Checkdisk is the last thing you want to do to a drive that has valuable information on it.

Rule #1 is to avoid doing anything that will write to the drive and checkdisk violates that rule.

The next step is to image the drive if you can. Then you proceed with trying to recover files; best to use recovery software against a copy of the image you just took. Then you will either have your files or need to send the drive out to specialists. And not having messed up your drive even more by running recovery attempts on it will maximize your odds of getting your files back. It might even save you extra expenses.
