What is it you're trying to do? Louder sound/Microphone? just curious?

Top picture is from set of turtle beach headphones with an inline audio control. Inline meaning the control is embedded along the line of the wire to the device.

The 2nd picture as you know is an amplifier. Just receives a signal to match and amplifies it louder. An audio amplifier, the term written on the case is what its called. It's a cheaper alternative if you just want the audio amplified compared to an A/V (Audio/Visual) receiver.
