550w power supply to a 500w ??

I have a custom built gaming computer with a 550w power supply and it`s busted, can I switch it with a 500w that I have laying around???

If it supplies enough wattage to support the system and all the cables and connectors all fit then sure. Just make sure the PSU you're putting in isn't a Dell PSU into a non Dell computer.

Thank you so much!!! It`s not a Dell PSU it`s from an older gaming computer just going into newer gaming computer.

You should be able to depending upon the age of the PSU. Older PSU's were very strong on the 3.3v and 5v rails while new PSU's are strong on the 12v rail and leave the 3.3v and 5 v around 20A. I'll suggest cleaning the old PSU out really good first with compressed air. Something to be aware of is that PSU's "age" and over time can no longer supply the current they did when new. If the PSU's fan starts running loud, it's an indication it either need cleaning or is working too hard delivering the needed current.
What are the DC outputs listed on the older PSU?

Hi, the outputs seem to be the same. I cleaned it out really good and I`m going to try it tomorrow and i`ll keep an eye out for the loud fan. Thank You for replying!!!
