Hey guys!

I'm wondering how I would be able to overclock this factory-overclocked GPU even further? I know it's possible to get the 970's nearly 100% up to speed with stock 980's. Right now, the Gigabyte's OC'd 970 sits at 1179 base, 1329 boost, and 7010 mhz memory clock.

To be quite honest, I'm really not sure what any of these mean nor how I'd go about changing them safely in MSI Afterburner (or the one Gigabyte supplied me on their disk). I know it's as simple as moving tabs, but I'd rather not try and experiment. I'd rather have an expert's opinion on to where I should clock each section so I don't blow up my recent $750 purchase of these two cards.

Hopefully someone can help!

Solution
Use MSI Afterburner.

Core Clock = +150
Memory Clock = +200

After this run GPU stress testing tools like Unengine Valley and run a benchmark.

Compare your benchmark when running at default clocks and overclocks.

Look if there are significant improvement.

The benchmark showed pretty much a steady 60fps, aside from initial loading dips. Question: What's a safe GPU Temperature? It was pushing 60 C, but I don't know what is too high with these overclocks.

Hi guys,. I was actually watching this topic while i was wondering how to overclock my g1 gaming. Iam new overclocker so i dont have so much experience. I have Gigabyte Gtx 970 G1 gaming as well and after i read this topic i OC with msi afterburner my Gpu +150 clock speed and 200 memory but the problem is when im playing games now like far cry 4 or Watchdogs i get gray screen, game freezes and i see an erro Display adapter stoped working or something like this. I just wanna know the reason. Is because of the overclock? my temperatures are pretty low. on ultra settings it goes max 66 C.. is coz of the drivers? Is coz of the overclock program ? Do i have to increase besides the clock and memory speed th eVotage maybe? Any help appreciated it

Not necessarily caused by only to high overclock. The gtx 970 seems to be having some problem with the boost feature and the voltages dropping to low compared to core speed in "low" utilization. (https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/784294/boost-feature-causes-gtx-970-980-instability-in-low-utilisation-situations/) I was able to fix this issue by using EVGA Precision X and the k-boost feature that locks the voltage at max. Whiteout Precision X my Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 was stable on +120 core and +200 memory, with k-boost I got +155 and +350. This is of course only a temporary fix, I don't want to run my card on max voltage all the time so hopefully this will be fixed somehow.

Edit, many cards seem to be stable on as high as +150-160 core and +500 memory. However I've read rumors about the rev 1.0 having Samsung memory where rev 1.1 has some cheaper memory, this could be the reason I for example only reach +350 memory (my card is rev 1.1).

Hmm, i see . I visited this website and followed carefulyl the steps http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/09/29/msi_geforce_gtx_970_gaming_4g_video_card_review/8#.VJdZ5sgNg . I increased my power limit to 110 , clock speed +140 and memory +250. For 2 days everything was fine. no screens at all and game was running ok, but 5 minutes ago same errow appeared.. I dont get it. But you posted a usefull info .. Im thinking to put into the stock clock again, i dont wanna have any troubles. The only thing who pissing me of is just my curiosity. What i mean is why i see this error? You know i am a lil bit nerd coz i didnt spent all those money to build an high end pc to have thoes erros you know? However , what you suggest me to do?

The GTX970 is one hell of a card even on stock clocks so you still have e high-end rig! What kind of error did you get? I actually had some progress with my Gigabyte 970GTX G1. I had forgotten that I was running on my spare PSU which is quite old (Antec TP3-650) and borrowed a more powerful one with a single 12V rail (the tp3-650 has 3x12v on 19amps which sucks and probably caused the instability). I am now able to run on the same clocks without Precision X, I think the old PSU was running very close to its max. What type of PSU do you have?

First of all happpy new year. Wish you the best. Well its not an error to be honest. while im playing afte r 10-15 minutes not always same time my monitor gets grey , game stucks ..Thats all. And sometimes i see an error like display driver stoped working or something. Thats with Clock speed +150 , memory clock +250 , power limit untouched , storage as well.. Then i tried with 140 clock speed1 250 memory clock and +110 power limit, it was ok for 2-3 days , then it happened again. My psu is thermaltake Smart Se 730W

First off. I would always keep your Power Limit at Max. Your system will only use what it needs, and will only run at max power if your system demands it. This might be funny coming from a person still using a Geforce GTX 460, but I have had those error/crashes trying to overclock my GPU. If using MSI Afterburner, put the voltge at max. The "Max" setting is the max setting within the "safe zone." This will not harm your GPU. Be careful if you are using EVGA's Precision X. You can still do the same, putting the voltage at max, if you do not have the "overvoltage" setting enabled. However, if enabling the overvoltage setting, proceed with caution. By using the overvoltage setting, you are potentially decreasing the lifespan of your GPU. Last step, back your core clock down by 10mHz steps while running a load demanding program, such as Heaven Benchmark, until you stop getting those crashes.

To recap:
Power limit - Max
Voltage - Max (with overvoltage disabled)
Core Clock - back down in steps of 10-15 Mhz until crashing stops

Hope this helps.

I agree with His solution. Try running stock first before proceeding with my solution.

Howdy folks. I have a single 970 gaming and I am currently using afterburner to overclock it to +179 and memory to +500. Temps around 61 to 63 degrees. If I go any higher than that I have issues. I run games on 4k and this single card is barely enough. Do you think if I added another 970 G1 Gaming I would be able to run 4k at 60 fps?
I really believe one of the reasons I can go that high on the overclocking is my AXi 1200 platinum. I have the whole system overclocked to maximum and the thing didn't even turned its fan on yet.

I came across this thread after looking at safe overclocks for my g1 970 right now I have it a 1529 on the boost clock and I have not noticed any issues I have read this may be a bad idea but holy ballz the frames :p

I was unable to use Core Clock = +150 and Memory Clock = +200 at stock vol. The driver crashed and restored after running Valley Benchmark 1.0 in couple of minutes.

hello guys. could a bad OC config gave a black screen/ no signal crash? because i max out everything but voltage and power and i got this error, but, for now, if i use just the stock settings, i dont get any king of trouble. Im asking because idk if i have to rma the card...
