So I have a network problem that seems proxy related. My computer shows that the network is connected but nothing gets access to the internet. I solved the problem with Firefox by choosing the "No proxy" option but nothing else will connect. Apart from Skype. Skype never had a problem connecting. Steam, Chrome and even internet explorer won't connect. I've tried adding them to the firewall exceptions and rolling back the computer settings by a week. I have Skyrim and single malt scotch so I can survive for now. But winter is coming. And being isolated from Teh internets may be my downfall.

Have you tried resetting Internet explorer? Could also be malware, run rkill then malwarebytes.

I ran a full scan with Malware bytes and it found nothing. Internet explorer I don't really care about. I'm more concerned with Steam chrome and ESO. I got firefox working so I have internet for browsing but it seems nothing else will connect. I've tried adding them as exceptions to the firewall. Seems somekind of proxy problem. May have to ring my provider.

Steam should not be using the proxy settings...but it might I suppose.

If you look in the proxy setting under IE many times you can not turn these option off or if you can they come back. This is caused by malware but it is also caused by many of the VPN clients that do not uninstall correctly. Once they break it the only way to fix this is editing the registry. I would suggest you search this topic on microsofts sites they have some very specific example of what to edit based on your OS. I will not attempt to replicate it here since editing the registry must be done extremely carefully.

Set IE back to default settings the usual way Internet Options>Advanced tab> Reset
Anything you installed such as Chrome, Firefox, Skype uninstall and reinstall ..... I've found it 1000x easier to get things up and running instead of trouble shooting it to death. Also test after you custom configure each step to see where the failure starts, that will be a huge clue as to what is happening and why....Cheers!

so I reset IE to default settings and it didn't work. I called my provider and they told me I don't have a proxy to use or connect to so why is IE trying to connect to a proxy that doesn't exist? I get the check proxy settings 127.0.0.1:57701. message. I've tried going to network settings and disabling all proxy options. I also tried Rkill which did not find any malware. Teh fug is going with my PC?

The malware is likely gone but the damage it did is still there. It changed the a registry setting for your proxy server and you need to delete that entry. I am very hesitant to post any information about what keys to change/delete in the registry because there are some difference between OS levels and if someone where to blindly follow what I post on the wrong level of OS they could causes massive issues for their machine.

So here is likely the link on the microsoft site but this is only one possibility. Be very careful to fully read this page before you take any actions.

You can check the host file, I have sometimes seem that cause issues it is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Open the file in notepad If there is any lines below:

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Delete those lines, save the file, restart your computer and test.

unfortunately that didn't work. The host file hadn't changed and the link didn't help. I'm at a loss.
