Processor: Intel i7 3770K (i3-3220 currently installed)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme3
Graphics: Gigabyte 7850 2GB
Power: Seasonic S12II 520W
Keyboard: Steelseries APEX
Mouse: Razer Naga
Case: NZXT Tempest 410

Hello, a few months ago (I think early August) I upgraded my CPU from an i3-3220 to an i7-3770k.

Ever since I did the upgrade, I've had this issue where my computer completely hangs. The keyboard will not respond, mouse will not respond, anything on the screen will freeze, sound cuts off. Fans will still run however, as the power is still on when the computer freezes. This causes me to hard shut down my computer, or wait for my computer to shut itself off during the hang. On reboot, I will get the "Windows did not shut down correctly" screen. I have not tried Safe Mode as of yet.

This issue recurs, and is also unpredictable. However, the freezes may be caused by CPU/RAM/VRAM intensive tasks, but not always. Numerous times I've gotten the freeze during and after closing Skyrim and a few other computer games like Vindictus (a bit CPU intensive).

Today I decided to put my i3-3220 back in, and so far I haven't had the freeze/hang after doing some gaming. Which has made me think I might have: gotten a faulty CPU; have hardware incompatibilties; software/driver conflict.

BIOS and drivers are all up to date as far as I know, and I've done HDD and RAM tests and they all pass. Also rewired and reseated hardware.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Would this i7 be a faulty CPU?

Try to get into safe mode and see what happens.

Thanks for replying. I ran in safe mode last night with my i7-3770K installed. I didn't really run into the issue. But I didn't get to do many intense tasks since it was safe mode. i7 is installed as of this post.

Run a stress test on the cpu and check your temps while you're at it, try to do it in safe mode so you can ignore a driver problem.

Just ran a CPU test both in and out of Safe mode. Both have passed. I suppose this may mean something else is the problem.

I would not condemn the i7 as being bad just yet....

Double check your MB has the lastest BIOS, or if the existing BIOS supports your chosen i7...

Back up any valuable data, reset your CMOS, and try a cold install to let the OS/MB get a 'fresh crack' at sorting out core assignments, vice simply trying to plug in an i7 when the OS/MB were previously using an i3....

Hello, mobo is certainly up-to-date + support the processor I have. I reset the CMOS earlier today. Lasted some hours, then when I hit a loading screen while playing Skyrim, the freeze happened once again. I'm almost out of ideas...
