I'm returning a CPU and forgot to set everything back to stock before pulling it. Getting paranoid now wondering if I should put it back in to revert all the settings, but my reasoning tells me that it's all controlled on the motherboard the CPU doesn't "remember" any of that anyway.

Is this right or should I go through the trouble of resetting it before sending it back?

Overclocking settings are "saved" on the motherboard, not the CPU.

No. Overclock settings are stored in your motherboard's BIOS. You should not have any problem returning the CPU.
