Im getting a htc m8 in about a week and im looking at sd card memory options. It just occured to me that there might be a probability that the sd port on the card has a mb/s ceiling. Im looking at getting a sandisk 64gb 80mb/s sd card. Im mostly going to use it for storing playstation 1 emulations and music, do you think those activities justify a larger transfer rate? Or if the phone can even handle those transfer rates in the first place?

There is not much cost difference between a class 10 and slower cards. You do want to make sure that the phone can work with it, speed and size both.

There is a samsung 64 gb 40 mb/s card for around $35 on amazon, there is also a sandisk 64gb 80 mb/s card for around $70 or double the price.

This website has a speed rating under the data section of 42mb/s but i think this is not what im looking for. Im not sure how i would find out about card compatibility. It does list having a nano-sim.

A 40 mb card is more than enough for anything.

You can use a class 10 card which is a 10mb / s minimum spec for full 1080p recording.

The 30mb /s spec is enough for 4K resolution recording.

You are looking at some very high end cards that only pricy DSLR cameras and pro video cameras can work with at the full speed.

Just get a class 10 SD card, you don't need anything faser.

This should give you some info about thos UHS cards http://www.lexar.com/support/sd-uhs-i-faqs
