Hi all. I have been reading here about cat5 cables how long they can be. My neighbours house 71m away and i am going to run a cable rather than two dishes. One it is cheaper and probably more stable. This is the cable which is very cheap.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cat-5E-Webro-Network-Cable-100M-Black-UTP-4-Pair-24-AWG-100-SOLID-COPPER-/151258749195?pt=UK_Computing_NetworkingCables_RL&hash=item2337b9590b

Then I want to divide it up to my five rental bungalows via 5 more cables. What do I need a my brother said a switch or should I just buy this. Which will boost the line? and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111460071275http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111460071275
lk,.also i can make a small hotspot area.
What do you think will it work? I can not get my own phone line as they are refusing to put one in as the neighbour is refusing to let them into his land where the pole is. I am in Spain LOL

I would use an outdoor rated cable like THIS. Cheap cable is often substandard and may not perform well.

I would use either a switch or a good quality router if you want to create your own subnet and not be on the neighbor's network. You can use either the router or several access points (routers configured as access points) to create a hotspot depending on how large an area you need to cover.

The main thing to watch out for when buying the cheapest cable you can find is copper clad aluminum cable. This is marked cat5e but it doesn't actually pass the tia/eia standards for cat5e. Of course they never mention that it is not certified cat5e cable. The stuff you have is solid copper which will be fine. Your second issue is running it outside. As mentioned outdoor cable is preferred. If you are going to bury it the soil will eat the cover very quickly in some areas. The other things that destroys it although not as quickly is sunlight. If you can partially protect the cable indoor cable will work outside, some water like rain will not hurt it. I many times use drip irrigation tubing as conduit mostly because it is very cheap and is designed to be water proof and buried. Although last time i did this I got lucky and got direct bury ethernet cable for cheap so you have to shop around.

Agree and agree. I like the idea of using drip irrigation tubing, probably much easier than the half inch PVC I usually use.

My earlier recommended link is what bill001g also recommends:

FULL COPPER CABLE - not CCA Copper Clad Aluminium like other sellers which can be brittle.

CAT 5E Solid Roll of Ethernet Cable - BLACK

Designed for outdoor use. Safe for use outside or inside.

100 metres long

4 x pairs (8 wire)

Conforms to ISO/IEC 11801, ANSI/TIA/EIA-568A

I am going above ground on poles. In one of the photos of the cable it has all the data but to me it is gobbly beloved patriot (I have no idea). It also says uv safe. If it last 10 years i think it will be ok for me. Believe it or not I was thinking of just putting tape round it. It Hardly rains here only had about 10 days of rain since this time last year. It is sunny though

I would not use tape, it will not last as long as the outdoor cable and will look bad sooner than the cable will have problems. I have some above ground outdoor cable on my current home in a very hot sunny climate and it has been out there 15 years and still looks good and works fine.

@Alan - consult a professional for that. That outdoor cable will be suspectible to lighting strikes, and one such strike will kill out the equipment on both ends of that cable (and possibly more), wiping out any saving you could do.

Last but not least - you probably want to provide WiFi to your rented bungaloows, and sattellite internet (you said you don't want another dish) is not known to be the fastest one.

I think some of these people are pro's
I have as much chance as winning the lottery than getting struck by lightening. I have been here 8 years only seen storms of that kind twice with not may strikes anyway. I will take the chance not with the lottery though cause I never win:(
