Hi i am having a similar frustrating issue

I having a similar frustrating issue with goflex the drive lights up. but then quiet alarm beep is coming from the drive, after a while the light starts flashing for 30 sec the goes solid and the alarm stops, the drive is not detected at ant point during this.

Hey lightitup. I would recommend that you check your external HDD with your manufacturer's software and see if there are any errors and if it passes the SMART test. You should also try the drive with another USB cable (not longer than 12") and another computer to see if it does the same thing.
You could also use DLG (Data Lifeguard Software which is free) for the test and do both tests - Quick and Extended. Here's a link for it: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810
