i7 3770 3.5 ghz
24 gig patriot ram
asus maximus 6 mobo
2x 6870 radeon
1 5450 radeon

so I went and got a third video card (5450) so I can crossfire my 6870s. Everything works fine, except the top card, the one closest to the cpu, is hitting 100 degrees centigrade for some reason. Idk what happened. It worked fine earlier. I recently took out the failing stock fan and installed a beastly aftermarket fan. I can hear it now, it sounds like a buzzsaw. The new video card is a slim profile, no fan style one. a card of yesteryear and days gone by. it fits between the 2nd 6870 and the PSU perfectly. While I thought this might make the middle card hotter, the top one is really hot instead.

idle temps are
1:43
2:38
3:34

Here is a picture of what I got while playing counterstrike global offensive. how can that game push a card to 100 ? I have no idea how this happened. I even pushed the fans to the max with msi afterburner.

as you can see in above pic, the top video card was just @ 100. which is completely unacceptable.

am I missing something ? I don't know what to do next.

Why did you need the 5450 to ceasefire and try taking it back out and test again

If you got two horses pulling a cart, adding a donkey isn't going to make it any faster.

I cant run my Wacom tablet while the cards are crossfired, its that simple. they don't support dual monitors when in crossfire, so I got the third card to do it because onboard wont work once I have videocards installed.

well, I tried taking it out and 3 rounds into cs:go, the fps started to hitch. which is totally new. I did just install the newest version of CCC, maybe that has more to do with it than the new card does. it never overheated like this before. its hotter than it was when the old fan was failing.

so, I re-applied thermal paste to it, checked the fan, changed slots, and... it still gets to 100 centigrade, but it just take slightly more time now. before it skyrocketed there, now it climbs slowly. what could be causing this ? voltage ? its not overclocked or anything.

lets see, rolled back driver, tried to place it in the tower by itself, I tried everything I can think of, but it still wants to overheat.

try the other 6870, alone. not the one that overheats, the other one.
