Now, I'm not exaclty sure what I'm after here - So I'll describe my situation and see if you know of any existent solutions.

I'm living in a student house for uni, and the main phone line in the house is in my mate's room. However, sometimes when we're all online the wireless signal becomes unstable. I've called the internet provider and they are getting the all-ok from the router, and so believe it is a problem between the computers connecting to the router, rather than the router to the internet.

I have a desktop and want to connect it via ethernet to help this, the router however CANNOT be moved and the only port in my room is a phone-line. Is there any piece of equipment I can use to connect my computer to the phone line, or do I have to run a cable all the way across the house and to the router?

Thanks in advance

You need a really long ethernet cable from pc to router....

You have to connect to the router. You could try a power-line adapter.

You can technically get equipment that will run over a phone line...that is how the DSL gets into your house but it tends to not be a cost effective solution.

Your only hope would be if the phone wire was actually put in with data grade cable. It has been common for many years to use data cable for phone wire just because it was simpler. So first step is to remove the plate and see if the wire looks like ethenet cable. Old style phone wire is red, black, orange, green and won't work.

Still even if it is data grade wire you now must find a path though the house to let you connect between the 2 locations. If they run it to some central location you might be able to modify the wiring to use it. If it is daisy chained from jack to jack you are going to have a much more difficult project.

Is router wireless? If not add an access point and get WiFi adapter should cost less than $80 new, look for used lower cost on Craigslist or like sites.

Sure stringing a wire through the house will work but having someone trip on it while you are working on it can damage everything costing you even more money....

This looks like a good first step to me too. In university housing, it may not be permitted or the wiring may be incompatible with the technology. If the OP gets it to work, be sure to turn on whatever security the device has.

My understanding from those living in school housing is that WiFi a low priority in the budget and the attitude is akin to saying users should take what they get and be thankful for it because it is cheaper than going mobile.
