Noob question here but I have recently built my new gaming system and I was wondering if I can squeeze anymore out of my cpu. I have the i7 4790 non k version and a z97 pro wifi ac mobo. There is a switch on the mobo that automatically overclocks the cpu or puts it in power saving. I was wondering if it would work with a non k i7 or will it damage the cpu. I dont want to try first hand incase it does destroy my sexy i7

More about : overclocking

Its not advisable , these cpus aren't designed to be overclocked at all and most likely an overclock will result in a damage in the long term.

Thanks for quick reply. I feel sick now I never got the k version for only like £20 extra. The non k is doing more than a good job as it is im just thinking of 1-2 years down the line

Your Welcome sir.

The turbo boost of 4.4 Ghz is really more than enough in most cases even 2-3 years down the road its still gonna be solid , I have the K version and haven't really thought about overclocking heck I even have disabled turbo boost and this beast is still doing well in rendering and editing.

For gaming its overkill right now ( most modern i7s ) as the games don't make use of more cores rather one or two stronger cores so an i5 or even i3 is still cutting edge for most games , most games are dependent on the GPU with the exception of BF4 which makes use of more cores on the CPU and is CPU dependent and same applies to most open world games like ARMA or DayZ ( are CPU dependent ) .

So more often than not your CPU will still stand the test of time and with a GPU upgrade every 2-3 years you won't feel the need to upgrade your CPU anytime soon :)

Turbo boost is 4.0 ghz and 3.6 stock. Its performing outstanding side by side with my r9 290x. Im just one of them power hungry people haha

Yeah I was mistaken its 4.0ghz with turbo boost , Still very healthy.

I have The i7-4790K with the 290 , Its a good combination and thinking of buying another 290 since the price drops are very tempting :D

Your i7 will stand the test of time ;)

I think AMD might release a patch to make its R9 200 series support DX 12 , we can only wait and see !!

If you have 2 working PCs like me with a spare 3rd then your choices become easier , CFX your current card and then when a new GPU comes along put it in another rig :D

I'd never advise somebody to have 2 powerful rigs at the same time :D

Not a bad idea. I have enough parts to bulid 2 systems. I might bulid 1 for my son and give him the 290x. Get him away from the consoles and onto the real deal

That's a good idea yet not good enough if he's young and 'll probably waste 90% of his time playing with the system :D
