I am planning to get a new laptop for around 1200 SGD

It would be mostly used in Computer Programming, Data Analysis running R, Hadoop, MySQL

Should i go for i5 processor or i7 ?
Many high end processor that I saw have mostly processing speed below 2 GHZ.
How important would that be in choosing a laptop?

Please guide

I don't know about data analysis or Hadoop but programming is cpu intensive . Depending on the type of programs you make, the cpu will make a difference. MySql I have used but I don't think that is as cpu intensive as programming depending on the queries you make. I would suggest an i5 if you have modest programming needs. An i7 is needed if you are making very cpu intensive programs which are 1000s of lines long. Also i7 are better at multi tasking if you use a lot of intense programs than an i5.

You are right velo. My opinion is i5 is a gaming laptop. It will be good isn't it?

Thanks for your opinion. For i5, any specific processor which would be good enough for such processes?

I would say make sure it is a mobile cpu and not a ulv one as you need the power for programming. As for the exact model I am not sure, maybe a 4400m. Of course this will depend on how much cpu power is needed for your programs.
