Here's the deal,

Last time I built a computer was 2005. Build a rather nice gaming rig, then got a job.

I have two jobs and a hobby that I'm hoping to mush together in this one "do-it-all" workstation.

My main job is Engineering, utilizing CADD, Revit, GIS, etc.

Second job is stock trading.

Hobby....gaming of course!!

So far here are the criteria:

-Corsair Carbide AIR 540 case

-Liquid cooling will be a must for CPU

-Overclocking a must (hoping for budget parts OC'ed to premium performance)

-Hyperthreading a must (CADD etc)

-2-4 Monitor capability (trading)

-Games are rarely played due to time constraints, and when I do it's mostly CSGO, however I'd like the ability to run BF4 etc (if possible). I would prefer a gaming card over a workstation card.

-budget preferred: $1200-$1500

-peripherals need not be included in price or build

Opinions welcomed

Thanks guys

Pretty well laid out. You have limited yourself to only the K series of i7 processors, which are not budget parts that can be overclocked. More like premium parts.

i7-4790k, your choice of Z97 motherboard, 16GB of memory, and a GTX970. Going to put you over budget though.

Thank you- I hate just coming on and expecting people to post a build for me, as I like to do all my research, but at least this will give me some direction.

Seems a lot has changed since '05. Who woulda thought?

Updated post to add a build. See above. A GTX 760 should be enough for occasional gaming, but if you can afford a GTX 970, then by all means, go for it. ASUS STRIX is the best one out there right now, followed by the EVGA ACX 2.0, which comes in at a distant second. MSI and Gigabyte cards are having several issues with coil whine and such.

Thank you,

I assumed a price of $300-$400 for GPU.

and honestly I don't really consider RAM an issue, as RAM is a dime a dozen and I can get by with 8gigs, hell my 6 gig laptop is squeaking by at the moment.

I cant decide on whether to sacrifice the OC for HT now or getting a cheaper CPU, OC- and then upgrade once HT tech has had some time to mature.

I'm leaning more towards the latter, this build doesnt have to be the end all/latest and greatest. I think bringing the RAM down to 8gig, and degradeing the CPU to say an overclocked i5 w/o HT should bring me back within range of my budget. Thoughts?

Very nice build thank you! I'll add it to my ongoing list.

As stated above, I have no problem spending ~$300 for a GPU, and can flex my budget accordingly. I notice you're running an i7 as well, what would be your thoughts on my conversation with the other gentleman?

i5 w/o HT and overclock until HT matures further or i7 now?

The overclocking really is just a fun by product of buying cheaper parts in all reality.

Beautifully done. Thank you

For CAD and image/video editing, definitely go with the i7. It even helps with gaming. Battlefield 4 runs very well on that CPU, especially when paired with a high-end GPU. 4.0 GHz base clock speed on the i7-4790k makes a big difference compared to 3.5 GHz base clock on the i5-4690k.
