I am currently building a system for my sister for Christmas, I currently have a AsRock extreme 3 Mobo running a i5-3570k, I'm think of giving her most of my current system and keeping my 770 and rebuilding. I'm looking at the msi 990fxa-gd80v2 mobo and looking into a fx-6300, I'm wondering what kinda of performance change i will get in games. I'm looking into a 6 core processor to help with my college courses and running all the Vm's i need to have running. Is this a good purchase? I am open to suggestions!

The i5 is a much better processor than the FX , A better option in VM should be the FX 8320 or the 8350.

The 83xx should be superior in VM however worse in gaming.

Gaming performance will decrease. The 6 core should help with the Vm's, however. If multiple cores are important to you as well as gaming, you may want to try and find a deal on a FX-8320 or 8350 and overclock them.

I would keep the I5 and give her the 6300 instead

Despite having less cores, the 3570k is still faster than the 6300 in multi-threaded applications, which means it's going to run multiple virtual machines better. What you really want is the Xeon E3-1220V3. It's a bit more expensive and lacks hyper-threading, but it will run VM's a lot better than the 3570k or 6300. It isn't bad for games either.
